During the Showa era, women had no choice but to sacrifice their lives to men due to poverty. Some to save their sick husbands, some for their sons, and still others to shoulder the debts made by their parents. It may seem like a pitiful story to an outsider, but life is such that you never know what's going to happen. Even more so if they are women, and I think there is a fundamental eros in the images of women who live bravely despite the circumstances in which they find themselves.
